In 2011 I had the privilege of traveling to Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, with a group from Project Lighthouse. Their mission was to assist the families in the most desolate living situations on the reservation, winterizing their homes and simply spending time with them to let them know there are people out there who care. As documentary photographer, my purpose was to capture what I saw, medium format camera in hand, loaded with black & white film. Our group spent most of our time with two Oglala Lakota families. Their love for each other in the midst of their circumstances was infectious. The children played with that free-spirited nature so uniquely belonging to them. Everyone I met allowed me into their homes to document their living conditions on the reservation, with the hopes of my sharing the images with others. The second song I wrote, "Pine Ridge Song," was my latest method of doing just that.
