Senseless
This song is for Breonna Taylor. I wrote the music and lyrics over the course of 2 days, March 12-13. It wasn’t until a few days later that I realized I’d finished writing it exactly 5 years to the day of her unjust killing on March 13, 2020. To my fellow 92% and to the 78%: We have marched and we have protested, now is the time to rest. Stay safe. Don’t be baited. Protect our peace.

Dirty
Dirty is written in 2 verses, set in 1953 and 2023. It is about 2 men traveling the road, minding their business until racism forces a hateful fate upon them.
PHOTO-DOCUMENTARY SONG PROJECT: PINE RIDGE SONG
In 2011 I had the privilege of traveling to Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, with a group from Project Lighthouse. Their mission was to assist the families in the most desolate living situations on the reservation, winterizing their homes and simply spending time with them to let them know there are people out there who care. As documentary photographer, my purpose was to capture what I saw, medium format camera in hand, loaded with black & white film. Our group spent most of our time with two Oglala Lakota families. Their love for each other in the midst of their circumstances was infectious. The children played with that free-spirited nature so uniquely belonging to them. Everyone I met allowed me into their homes to photograph their living conditions on the reservation, with the hopes of my sharing the images with others. This original song and video represent my latest method of doing just that.

PHOTO-DOCUMENTARY SONG PROJECT: WALK ON BY
“Walk On By” is the first song I wrote. As the inspiration for my song, I present to you some of the people I encountered, walking the streets of Miami, medium format camera in hand. All names are real. It’s amazing how much people are hungering to share about their lives if someone is willing to listen. Please enjoy my graduate photography thesis project, “Scratch the Surface,” to the tune of my song, “Walk On By.” (My urban landscape photos included in the video are primarily of the RiNo District, Denver, CO 2007.)
